Today, it’s official. What used to be known as Venable Elementary in Charlottesville is now Trailblazer Elementary. The new name honors the Charlottesville 12, who desegregated both Venable and Lane High School.
Dozens of students, teachers, school staff, civil rights and city leaders were on hand to honor the brave former students. Mr. Alex-Zan, one of the 12, told the crowd about his journey and his hopes for the future. He was 7 when he walked through the doors of Venable for the first time. He mother accompanied him. She was also on hand for today’s event.
The ceremony ended with a ribbon-cutting, which you can watch on our Instagram page.
