Charlottesville City Schools Re-evaluates Elementary Attendance Zones Community Members are Invited to Learn More, Give Feedback

Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) is launching a community engagement process to discuss and gather feedback on potential elementary school rezoning. Possible changes to current attendance zones – which haven’t been significantly updated in 50 years – would prevent overcrowding of individual elementary schools, particularly in light of housing developments and other City or UVA policies that might bring an increased number of students into the schools.

In early fall, the schools selected the consulting firm Woolpert to guide the process. In addition, the schools have formed two advisory groups. The Staff Work Group for Rezoning includes staff executive leadership and department representatives including pupil transportation and family and community engagement. The Superintendent’s Advisory Committee for Rezoning includes Charlottesville Education Association representatives, Board members, elementary PTO parents, and executive leadership.

These advisory groups will inform draft recommendations that will be brought to the community for feedback at meetings from October 28-30 and on November 6. Based on public feedback, the draft recommendations may be revised accordingly. When a recommendation is final, it will be presented to the School Board for further discussion and input, and then a month later, the Board will vote on the recommendation. The final vote is expected in January or February 2025. Implementation for changes would likely begin in August 2026, which would coincide with the return of 5th-graders to elementary schools.

Community Meetings on Rezoning:

Staff, parents/guardians, students, and community members are invited to learn more and provide feedback. All meetings are open to the public.
