CRHA planners, partners, residents and friends are all weighing in how to change Westhaven for the better.
Westhaven was built in 1965 after Charlottesville leaders decided to redevelop the historically black neighborhood of Vinegar Hill. This tragic decision forced many families to uproot and relocate to Westhaven, which encompassed Cox’s Row and Echo Lane, which were also black communities.
Now, as plans come into focus for a reimagined Westhaven, there’s an opportunity to right the wrongs of the past and give everyone a safe, modern community to be proud of.
In 2022 a year long comprehensive review began. Arnold Design Studio came onboard in 2024. Master planning is now underway and CRHA hopes to seek funding for Westhaven’s first phase of redevelopment, with hopes to start in 2026.
