Another Local Grocery Store to Close: Twice is Nice Buys Reid’s Property

Charlottesville, VA, Jan. 6, 2025 – In a joint statement, Twice is Nice and Reid Super-Save Market today announced they have reached an agreement for the donation-based nonprofit resale store to purchase the longtime family-owned market property at 600 Preston Avenue.

Under the terms of the agreement, Reid’s will close its doors in the coming weeks. Twice is Nice intends to move out of the two Preston Avenue storefront locations it currently leases, where it faces space constraints and uncertainty about future development plans, and consolidate its operations into a single larger store at the current Reid’s site. The move will occur in early 2026, following planned renovations to the market building.

“The decision to close and sell was not taken lightly,” said Sue Clements, co-owner of Reid’s with her sister Kim Miller. “We tried everything, but we just couldn’t make it work. The hardest thing for us is the impact on our employees, who we’ve always thought of as family.”

For Twice is Nice, the purchase secures a future in the Preston Avenue corridor it has called home for 40 years, while providing room to accommodate its expanding volume of donations.

“We are so grateful for this opportunity,” said Gordon Walker, chairman of the Twice is Nice Board of Directors. “While we are as sad as anyone to see an iconic local business like Reid’s close its doors, we are excited to carry on the Reid’s tradition of serving the surrounding neighborhoods by providing high quality goods at affordable prices.”

“We always assumed whoever we sold to would tear the building down and put up something new,” Clements said. “Selling to a nonprofit that is helping the community is a real plus for us.”
